Paediatric Dietitians

How paediatric dietitians help make sure children with feeding difficulties get the nutrition they need to grow.

What Does a Paediatric Dietitian Do?

Paediatric dietitians are qualified health professionals who assess and treat diet and nutrition problems in babies, children and young people. Dietitian is a protected title in the UK, and dietitians are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Children with feeding difficulties may eat a very limited range of foods. Research suggests that 1 in 5 children with SEND and feeding difficulties have a nutritional deficiency, so making sure a child’s diet meets their needs is an important part of support.

How They Help With Feeding

  • Checking growth and how much a child is eating and drinking
  • Working out whether a limited diet meets a child’s nutritional needs
  • Advising on supplements where they are needed
  • Building on the foods a child already feels safe with
  • Supporting children with medical needs such as allergies, reflux or gut problems
  • Working alongside families and other professionals as part of a team

Autism West Midlands

Through workshops and learning events, families have been able to explore topics relating to feeding differences, participation and neurodevelopment.

Worcestershire Parent Carer Forum

Partnership work with Worcestershire Parent Carer Forum has provided opportunities to hear family perspectives, support local engagement activities and strengthen conversations around feeding development, SEND and inclusion.
